The Seismic Simulator of the University of Patras is a new laboratory infrastructure, built recently by the Department of Civil Engineering. The simulator is intended to be used for applying a variety of time-varying base excitations (seismic or not) to structures, structural components and special types of equipment. It comprises a 3x5m stringer-plate steel table with the motion provided by a 250kN actuator along the long table direction with all other motion components blocked or minimized. The Seismic Simulator can apply dynamic signals of max 0.75g at full payload (10ton. at 3m above the table). A favorable characteristic of the simulator is its capacity in applying earthquake-type signals with velocities up to 1.2m/sec.. The system is supplied with a 16-channel data acquisition system. The main research targets of the lab is the verification of design approaches, the determination of the capacity of structures, the behavior of soil under seismic shaking, the response of equipment or artifacts employing seismic protection devices.
