Ioannis A. Koutrouvelis was born in Xylokastro, Greece. He is graduate of Mathematics (1970) from the University of Athens and holds M.A. (1973) and Ph.D. (1975) degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYB) with specialization in Statistics. He served as full Professor (1988-2013) and as Associate Professor (1984-1988) in the Division of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Department of Engineering Sciences, University of Patras, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses of Probability, Statistics and Quality Control for engineering students..After the closure of the Department of Engineering Sciences, he joined the Department of Civil Engineering from which he retired.

Between 1975 and 1984 he taught in State University of New York at Buffalo, University of Georgia, Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of South Carolina (in the last two as Associate Professor). He has also taught as Visiting Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Cyprus (2007-08).

Dr. Koutrouvelis has supervised the doctoral theses of 4 students and many M.Sc theses. His writings and research is concentrated in Statistics (Applied, Computational and Mathematical), Stochastic Hydrology and Quality Technology. He is co-author of the book "An Introduction to the Design and Analysis of Experiments" with George Canavos (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2009), author of 10 text books in Greek and has published scientific papers in prestigious international journals (Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrika, Journal of Quality Technology, Biometrics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B, Water Resources Research, Journal of Hydrology, Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, etc.).

He has served as Academic Coordinator for the creation of educational material and the functioning of the graduate program "Quality Assurance" of the Hellenic Open University (1998-2013), member of the Executive Board  (1988-2000) και Vice President  (2012-) of the Greek Statistical Institute, Chairman of the Department of Engineering Sciences of  the University of Patras (1989-1991), Director of the Division of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the same department (1987-89) and member of the Executive Board of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Virginia Commonwealth University (1982-84).
