Professor George A. Athanasopoulos is among the recipients of the ASCE 2010 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award. The award is bestowed upon the authors of a paper worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution to geotechnical engineering. He received this award for the paper published in the June 2009 issue of the ASCE Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Journal titled, “Shear Strength of Municipal Solid Waste”. The paper was based on an extensive series of experimental data, a significant portion of which were obtained in the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of our Department. This contribution is a result of a research collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley, Geosyntec Consultants, the University of Texas at Austin and Arizona State University.
