An undergraduate subject is offered this Fall at MIT by Prof. of Materials Science and Engineering Lorna Gibson, on mechanical behavior of materials, as an online MITx course (3.032x), beginning on Wednesday, September 3. The subject covers the basics of mechanics (stress, strain, Hooke's law, Mohr's circles, principal stresses, viscoelastic response, yield criteria, creep, fracture) as well as material behavior (explanations at a more atomistic level for elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity, creep and fracture). Quite a number of biological examples will be given in the class (e.g. trabecular bone orientation and principal stresses; sandwich panels in plant leaves and bird skulls; creep of bone; scaling laws to explain how woodpeckers avoid brain injury).
