UME School - IUSS Pavia Doctoral Programmes [06/03/2014]

Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) Doctoral Programmes in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE), in Risk and Emergency Management (REM) and Weather Related Risk (WRR).

Applications are currently open for the 2014/15 academic year, with a deadline of 11th April 2014. The competitive examination will award a total of 8 positions and scholarships. Full details of the programme, as well as the application procedure and scholarship opportunities, can be found on the following website: http://www.umeschool.it/.

PhD in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE):

The 2014/2015 edition of the Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE) curriculum of the PhD Programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) is being offered by the UME Graduate School of the IUSS Pavia. The PhD courses aim to provide students the highest quality training with an unique scientific and professional expertise and advanced knowledge of the cultural, technical and managerial characteristics of earthquake engineering and engineering seismology. The syllabus offers a comprehensive set of subjects covering applied mechanics, structural engineering, earthquake engineering, engineering seismology and soil dynamics, with emphasis on both theoretical background and design considerations. The fundamental fields of instruction include aspects of seismology, geology, geotechnics, behaviour of materials and structures, structural analysis, design of new structures and upgrading of existing structures.

Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 11th April 2014, and scholarships are available for the highest ranking applicants. Full details of the programme, as well as the application procedure and scholarship opportunities, can be found at www.roseschool.it/page/252/application-procedure.html.

PhD in Risk and Emergency Management (REM):

The 2014/2015 edition of the Risk and Emergency Management (REM) curriculum of the PhD Programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) is being offered by the UME Graduate School of the IUSS Pavia to train graduates and professionals in the assessment, mitigation and management of extreme events, with a particular focus on those arising from natural hazards.
The unique characteristics of the programme include the broad, interdisciplinary curriculum that includes topics of statistics and probability, law, economics, resource management, natural hazards and risk, finance, insurance, sociology, communication, psychology, public health and medicine. Moreover, the innovative teaching structure allows renowned lecturers from around the world to make up the teaching body.
Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 11th April 2014, and scholarships are available for the highest ranking applicants. Full details of the programme, as well as the application procedure and scholarship opportunities, can be found at www.umeschool.it/rem/applications/.

PhD in Weather Related Risk (WRR):

The 2014/2015 edition of the Weather-Related Risk (WRR) curriculum of the PhD Programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes (UME) is being offered by the UME Graduate School of the IUSS Pavia. The WRR Programme covers the domain of risks linked to hydro-meteorological extremes.

The objective of the programme is to examine the physics of the processes related to extreme hydro-meteorological events and the impact of climate change on their occurrence rate and on their intensity. Another objective is the investigation of techniques for devising meaningful damage and risk scenarios, and for identifying efficient risk mitigation strategies. The “soil/atmosphere” specialization area intends to form experts in the sector of flood, landslide, drought and forest fire risk, while the “ocean/atmosphere” specialization area has its main focus on the assessment and mitigation of risk posed by the effects of hurricanes and extra-tropical cyclones, such as wind, rain, and storm surges.

Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 11th April 2014, and scholarships are available for the highest ranking applicants. Full details of the programme, as well as the application procedure and scholarship opportunities, can be found at www.umeschool.it/wrr/applications.
